The refurb
The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens underwent a major refurbishment, reopening in 2018 after 18 months and €19 million. The result? A sophisticated, luxury hotel that melts into the natural surroundings. The hotel is set on a raised site in the Macgillycuddy Reeks mountain range, and it does not miss an opportunity to show it off.
The dining room has a double-height ceiling, drawing the scenery into the room. Meanwhile, the six-metre-high lobby is a whimsical library with striking glass-stained windows and tiled columns, designed by Swiss architects Monoplan.

The location
Set in Beaufort, Killarney, in the heart of the Kerry countryside, The Dunloe overlooks the stunning Gap of Dunloe. The hotel is set on a 64-acre estate among the ruins of the 13th-century Dunloe Castle. Built by the Norman Fitzgeralds in 1215 as part of the Kerry Defence to patrol the Gap of Dunloe, the castle grounds are now a tranquil oasis to explore. With beautiful gardens, an arboretum with rare trees from around the world, and a dreamy field dotted with cows and mini Austrian Hafflinger ponies, this is the place to unwind in nature’s best.
