Egypt has long been fancied as a destination of mighty monuments, desert lands and intriguing ancient artifacts. On my recent Luxury Gold journey, I found that Egypt is so much more. Arriving at Cairo’s historic Mena House, whether it’s after an international flight or a day of exploring, is always a treat. The tranquil, palm-fringed gardens inspire a sense of calm, while the intricately carved ceilings and elegant décor evoke the country’s rich architectural heritage.
Unsurprising given its golden-age grandeur, the Mena House has played host to several notable guests, such as Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill, King George V and Queen Mary. What a treat indeed to count myself among these famed guests.
Upon arrival on my first day, I found I had already been checked in by my smiling Traveling Concierge, Hazem. He showed me to my room, where my luggage was waiting for me, along with the most breathtaking view of the pyramids. Just one of the special benefits that Hazem and Luxury Gold had arranged.
A qualified Egyptologist, Hazem was eager to share his local and historic knowledge with me. We looked at the role women played in Ancient Egypt, as he spoke of the powerful and respected Pharaoh, Hatshepsut, who renowned Egyptologist James Henry Breasted declared “the first great woman in history of whom we are informed.”
Although subsequent rulers tried to erase her legacy, Hazem had studied the partially remaining hieroglyphs in her temple and explained how they recite the belief that the sun god Amun created her himself. A testament to her political savvy, Hatshepsut’s grasp of religion, as well as her heritage and education, were instrumental to her becoming Pharaoh and ruling over a time of great peace and prosperity.
